49 STUDENTS RECEIVE EDUCATIONAL AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING SCHOLARSHIPS
ENID, OK May 8, 2008 — Educational and leadership training opportunities await 49 undergraduate students during the 2008-09 academic year, courtesy of the Phillips University Legacy Foundation Scholars program. The students have been awarded over $143,000 in scholarships; 43 scholars are Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) members from 17 DOC regions nationwide.
Full-time undergraduate students attending any of the 17 colleges or universities affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are eligible to apply for the annual scholarships of up to $5,000. (www.pulf.org/legacyscholars)
The successful program has mentored 220 undergraduates who have exhibited prior leadership within their churches, schools and communities. Since its inception in 2002, the Legacy Scholars program has provided over $688,000 in academic financial support to promising young Christian leaders.
The scholarship program provides leadership training, and then the ability to apply new leadership skills through a 48-hour volunteer community service project. Legacy Scholars participate in a four day all-expense-paid Leadership Development Conference hosted by the Legacy Foundation. Motivational speakers, lay church leaders, and Phillips University alumni contribute during the training weekend.
For 91 years Phillips University, located in Enid, OK, was highly respected nationwide for its academic excellence and quality Christian education associated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the seminarians who shared its campus, Phillips Theological Seminary. The Foundation was established to perpetuate the University’s legacy upon its closing in 1998.
